Keyword Cannibalization: When Your Own Pages Compete

You write a new article targeting a keyword you already rank for, expecting to strengthen your position. Instead your average position gets worse. Both pages now flicker in and out of the results for that query, neither holding a stable rank, and the clicks that used to land on one URL are now split across two — at a lower combined total than the single page earned alone. You didn’t add coverage. You created competition between your own pages.

Keyword cannibalization is one of the few SEO problems that gets worse the more content you publish. The instinct to cover a topic thoroughly — write more, target more queries — backfires when two pages end up chasing the same query with the same intent. Google can only rank one of your URLs in the spot that matters, so it picks, and the picking is unstable. The authority that should compound on one page gets divided. The fix is rarely “write more”; it’s usually “merge, differentiate, or consolidate the signals.”

What Cannibalization Actually Is

Cannibalization is not two pages appearing for related queries. It is two or more of your pages competing for the same query with the same search intent, forcing Google to choose between them.

The distinction is everything, because the wrong diagnosis leads to destroying pages that should exist. If you have a page on “running shoes for flat feet” and another on “best running shoes for overpronation,” those serve overlapping but distinct intents and may legitimately rank for different queries — that’s coverage. If you have two pages both targeting “running shoes for flat feet” with the same buyer intent, Google has to decide which one deserves the rank, and that’s cannibalization.

The damage has three components. First, split click-through: when both pages surface for a query across different searches, total clicks land on two URLs at a combined rate lower than one consolidated page would earn, because neither page holds the strongest position consistently. Second, split authority: internal and external links that should concentrate on one URL are divided, so neither page accumulates the link equity to rank as well as a single consolidated page could. Third, ranking instability: Google oscillates between the two URLs, so your average position is worse and noisier than either page achieves in isolation. The oscillation is the tell — a single page that simply ranks lower than you’d like is not cannibalization; two pages trading the rank back and forth is.

Detecting It in Search Console

GSC is the primary detection tool because it shows you which of your URLs actually surface for which queries — the ground truth of what Google is doing, not what you assume.

Start in the Performance report. Pick a query you care about, filter to it exactly, and open the Pages tab. If exactly one URL appears, no cannibalization on that query. If two or more of your URLs appear for the same query, you have a candidate — but candidacy isn’t confirmation. Look at the relative impressions and average position. A clean case has one dominant URL carrying most impressions at a good position; a cannibalization case has two URLs splitting impressions with neither holding a strong, stable rank.

The confirming signal is volatility across time. Compare two date ranges — the trailing 28 days against the prior 28. If the URL that dominates the query flips between periods, or if the query’s average position is worse than either page reaches on its own, Google is oscillating. That instability is the symptom that justifies action.

There’s a subtler reading worth doing here. GSC reports average position per (query, page) pair, and when two of your pages both surface for a query, the headline average for the query blends them in a way that hides the problem. A query showing an unremarkable average position of 8 might actually be two pages alternating between position 5 and position 12 — neither holds 5, both drag the average. Splitting the query out to the page level is what exposes this: two URLs each with mediocre, wobbling positions on the same query is the fingerprint of cannibalization, where a single page would show one stable, better position. The blended average is a trap; the per-page split is the truth.

Work the other direction too. Open the Pages tab first, pick a page, and switch to its Queries tab to see what it ranks for. Then check whether another of your pages ranks for those same queries. Pages that share a large overlap of high-intent queries are cannibalizing each other even if no single query screams it — the overlap itself is the signal. A page whose entire query profile is a subset of another page’s profile is almost always a consolidation candidate.

For sites past a few hundred pages, manual query-by-query inspection doesn’t scale, and the cannibalization audit becomes a programmatic join: pull every (query, page) pair from the GSC API, group by query, and flag any query where two or more URLs both clear a meaningful impression threshold and sit within a few positions of each other. That flag list is your worklist.

Consolidate, Differentiate, or Canonicalize

Once you’ve confirmed cannibalization, there are three remedies, and choosing the wrong one wastes a page or fails to fix the problem. The choice depends on whether the competing pages should be one page or two.

Consolidate when the two pages should really be one. This is the most common and usually the right answer: two thin or overlapping pages targeting the same intent, neither strong on its own. Merge the better content from both into the stronger URL, then 301-redirect the weaker URL to it. The redirect passes the weaker page’s accumulated link equity and any external links to the survivor, so the consolidated page inherits both pages’ authority and the split finally resolves onto one URL. Consolidation is the right call whenever you can’t articulate a distinct reason for both pages to exist. Pick the survivor by which URL Google already prefers (more impressions, better position in GSC) and which has more or better backlinks — redirecting the established URL into the newer one throws away history.

Differentiate when the two pages should both exist but have drifted into the same intent. Sometimes you genuinely want two pages — a beginner’s guide and an advanced guide, a comparison and a buyer’s guide — but they were written too similarly and now compete. Here the fix is editorial: sharpen each page’s intent so they target distinct queries. Rework titles, headings, and on-page focus so one clearly serves one intent and the other serves a different one. Adjust internal anchor text so each page is linked with anchors matching its distinct target, not the shared one. Done right, the two pages stop competing and start covering complementary queries — you keep both pages and resolve the conflict without losing anything.

Canonicalize when the pages are near-duplicates you must keep live but shouldn’t compete. The narrow case: two URLs that are substantively duplicative — a printer-friendly version, a parameterized variant, a syndicated copy — where you can’t redirect because users need both, but only one should rank. A rel=canonical from the weaker to the stronger consolidates the ranking signals onto the canonical target while keeping both accessible. This is the right tool only for genuine near-duplicates; pointing a canonical between two materially different pages either gets ignored by Google or wrongly suppresses a page with independent value.

A decision rule cuts through the three options cleanly: ask whether you can write a one-sentence reason both pages should exist that a reader would accept. If you can’t, the pages are really one page — consolidate by redirecting the weaker into the stronger. If you can, but the pages have drifted into the same intent anyway, they should stay two — differentiate them until each owns a distinct query. Reach for canonicalization only in the residual case where the pages are near-identical, both must stay reachable for non-search reasons, and a redirect would break a user need. Most cannibalization resolves to consolidate or differentiate; canonical is the exception, not the default, and treating it as the default leaves the underlying split half-fixed because Google honors canonicals between near-duplicates far more reliably than between merely similar pages.

The Cannibalization Audit as Routine

Cannibalization isn’t a one-time cleanup. It accrues as you publish — every new page targeting a query you already cover is a potential conflict — so the audit belongs in your routine.

Run it whenever you publish into a topic you already have coverage on: before publishing, check GSC for which existing URLs already rank for the new page’s target query, and confirm the new page has a genuinely distinct intent rather than a fourth competitor for a query three pages already chase. Run the full programmatic sweep — the (query, page) join across your entire GSC profile — on a cadence, quarterly at least, to catch conflicts that emerged gradually. And re-run the query-level check after any consolidation to confirm the redirect resolved the oscillation rather than just moving it.
